Sense-Making, Meaningfulness, and Instrumental Music Education
2020
The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the nature of "meaning" and "meaningfulness" in the context of instrumental music education. By doing so, I propose to expand the ways in which instrumental music educators conceive their mission and the ways in which we may instill meaning in people's lives. Traditionally, pursuits of philosophical deliberation have claimed that meaningfulness comes from either personal happiness (e.g., Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill) or an impersonal sense of duty (e.g., St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Immanuel Kant). However, philosopher Wolf (2010) criticizes these positions in favor of a broader perspective, one that arises from understanding that …

L’insegnamento musicale nella Casa degli Spersi di Palermo nel Settecento: nuovi documenti
2022
The "Casa degli Spersi Mascoli" ("Domus Dispersorum Marium"), the predecessor of today's "Alessandro Scarlatti" Conservatory, was the most important educational institution in Sicily inthe modern era: founded in 1617 as an orphanage, it later specialized in music teaching, while maintaining until 1917 the function of a boarding school intended for orphans and the poor. Its history and organization present a clear reference to the model of the conservatories founded in Naples between the 16th and 17th centuries. In this essay, after briefly reviewing the foundation of the institution, I will focus on some new documents related to music teaching during the 18th century.
Finnish Classroom Teacher Students' Experiences of an Online Music Course During The COVID pandemic
2022
When studying music, skills are often practised with a teacher, face-to-face, in a classroom. What are the experiences of classroom teacher trainees when music teaching becomes asynchronous, i.e., an individually completed online course? This question, among other things, was explored at a Finnish University's Teacher Education Department in autumn 2020, resulting in the production of a two-credit online music course on the Moodle learning environment. It was implemented for the first time during the summer term in 2021. The students’ experiences with the functionality of the e-learning module were analysed through data-driven content analysis. The study represents an intensive case study u…
Student teachers’ views of their own musical skills to teach the National Core Curriculum in Finland
2022
As in many other countries, Finnish primary school teacher education has reduced substantially the amount of music studies during recent decades. From the perspective of the National Core Curriculum, there is a reason to reflect on teacher education and primary school student teachers’ skills to teach music. The present study investigates 392 student teachers’ musical skills in five different teacher training programmes in Finland. The data, mainly based on students’ self-assessment, was collected through a quantitative questionnaire. The results reveal significant shortcomings of music education in teacher training. For example, many key content areas such as singing or composing, are addr…
